Brothers Joe and David grew up in Leeds and were influenced by their mother’s love of music and their father’s passion for classical guitar. The drive and direction of The Dunwells has always come from the brother’s desire to create indie acoustic music. In the early days they played a defining show at the Folk Alliance in Memphis, this took the West Yorkshire line up onto an intense recording and touring schedule around the US and Canada.
Highlights include:
• Two record deals (Playing In Traffic/ Concord Music Group)
• Major festivals like SXSW, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, ACL, Winnipeg Folk Festival
• Sharing a stage with Ed Sheeran, Sheryl Crow, Need to Breathe, Josh Ritter, Mumford and sons and Foy Vance.
• Appearing on TV – The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the BBC with Bob Harris and Andrew Marr.
Plus, extensive touring all in support of their Debut Album Blindsighted Faith recorded at Willie Nelson’s Ranch (TX) and EP ‘Follow The Road’ recorded at Village studios (LA). Earning them a top 40 billboard position and a Top 20 AAA with ‘I Could Be A King’ On US Radio. After years of worldwide touring which had them away from their families for extended periods, the brothers felt the pull to be a little closer to home and concentrate on building a UK audience. 2016 saw the release their second full-length studio album ‘Light Up the Sky’ produced by Steve Harris (Kodaline, Kaiser Chiefs, U2) recorded in Driffield Yorkshire, released on Concord and Decca Records. Quickly after:
The band found themselves back on the road around the UK, Europe, and US with Bryan Adams on his UK stadium tour along with Lucy Spraggan, Jeremy Loops, and Need to Breathe on three other headline tours. The ‘Light up the Sky’ album has been streamed over 6 million times on all streaming platforms.
After testing the waters with independently released singles (All Time High, Colour My Mind, We Made Fire in The Pouring Rain) songs that were written and recorded whilst touring the 4 world. (London to Nashville, New York to Glasgow) the brothers felt ready to produce and release their third studio album ‘Something in the Water’ independently in 2019. Followed by: Stadium shows with Tom Jones, a six-week tour with Scouting For Girls in the UK and Ireland, extensive touring around Europe with Pete Murray and Festival plays at SXSW, The Great Escape, Never World and Camper Calling.
Since the end of March, Joe and David have been performing a daily live stream on their social platforms to stay connected to their fans during this global pandemic. This has inspired the latest single release ‘Army of Friends’ where all proceeds go to charities tackling Covid-19. Whether it is working remotely or from their studio in Leeds the brothers are always creating. Producing future Dunwell releases and working with amazing artists around the world such as, Meg O’Neill, Lucy May Walker, Ben Hughes, Matt Cardle, Lucy Spraggan and Pete Murray. They look forward to releasing new music and touring in 2021.
